Good Ol’ A Capella at American University

“I’m talking ’bout soul to soul, brother to brother, a capella… it sounds good to me…” and to the rest of the campus here at American University where On A Sensual Note, the university’s only premier all-male a capella group, has amassed quite the following. From sorority girls and athletic teams to elderly neighbors nearby and even President Barack Obama during his ’08 campaign, On a Sensual Note has fans all over the district.

The group began back in 1996 but OASN truly found it’s footing in 2000. The group’s come a long way since then and lucky for us, their repertoire has as well. Featuring songs like Cecilia by Simon & Garfunkel, Mama Said by The Shirelles, and Lean on Me by Bill Withers, OASN wins over the older crowd crooning favorites with new beats. Don’t think that means the boys forget their younger fans, OASN is constantly revamping radio hits like a Kanye West Medley, We are Young by Fun.,  I’ll Make Love to You by Boyz II Men, and most recently, Adele’s Rolling in the Deep.

All of the OASN members are students at AU and find time to balance their studies with what clearly is a passion for music and performing. Though the guys prove time and time again they can do more than just carry a tune, in my time spent with them I quickly learned that OASN is bigger than just a musical group. They’re a bunch guys in ties doin’ what feels right and creating a community of music, personality, and friendship around them.
